How to import Anki decks into Flashtex

Export an Anki deck as an .apkg file and import it into Flashtex. Learn how .colpkg files and media are handled.

To move an Anki deck into Flashtex, export it as an .apkg file and choose that file in Flashtex. You can also import a .colpkg collection, but Flashtex puts all of its cards in one deck.

Export a package from Anki

In Anki on your computer, open File → Export. Choose an Anki deck package (.apkg), select the deck, and turn on Include Media if you want its images. Save the file somewhere you can reach from Flashtex, such as iCloud Drive. To export your whole collection, choose a .colpkg file instead. Anki’s export guide explains the export options.

For example, if your Anatomy deck contains diagrams, export Anatomy.apkg with media included.

Import into a new Flashtex deck

  1. In Flashtex, start creating a deck.
  2. Tap Import Anki File (apkg) and choose your .apkg or .colpkg file.
  3. Flashtex creates a deck with the imported cards.

Flashtex uses the title you entered for the new deck, or the file’s name if you left the title blank. To keep Anki decks separate, export and import each one as its own .apkg file.

Add Anki cards to an existing deck

Open the deck in Flashtex. Tap the pencil button in the top right, choose Import + Export, then tap Import Anki File (apkg) under Anki Deck. Choose your file. Flashtex shows how many new cards it added.

If you import the file into the same deck again, Flashtex updates cards whose question text still matches. If you changed a question in Anki, Flashtex adds it as a new card.

What carries over

Flashtex turns Anki card fronts and backs into questions and answers. It also imports tags and PNG or JPEG images included in the package. It does not carry over Anki review history or note types.

Troubleshooting Anki imports

If a card shows a blue [?] where an image should be, export the deck again with Include Media turned on. Flashtex supports PNG and JPEG images, but not PDF or SVG images.

Audio does not import, and Anki image occlusion cards do not retain their hidden areas. Their images may appear more than once. Cards made with other Anki add-ons may also look different in Flashtex. If an import still looks wrong, contact Flashtex support.
